Meeting with The Neighbors TOday

I had to step over a tree chipper to get to work today. They're cutting down a big maple tree across the street from Bicycle. The weather is starting to warm up in olympia. Today we're working on building a new database and a new web store. Also the nextdoor neighbors are stopping by to talk about their next releases with us. fun stuff!

Spring is coming

Bob and Maria and I are working today. I've been listening to the itunes on shuffle, some funny stuff in there like the christmas chipmunks album. I'm excited to be back home and to be working on the record label more. Right now that means lots of work on the website and on our data base. fun fun. ok back to work!

getting signed to a label

hey paul,
the way we usualy sign bands goes something like this, I meet them at a show and like their music, they live in olympia so we see each other around alot and over time we develop a relationship, I tell bob, hey this band is really cool you should check them out, bob checks them out and he likes them too, the band is really interested in touring, and puts alot of energy into their project but dosen't have the cash to record themselves and put out their own album. Bob and I really want to help them out so we offer to help them record and release their album.
Most small labels I know work this way. If it is your goal to get signed by a label, I would just start by playing shows, setting up shows for other people and touring a bunch and releasing your own albums. good luck!

new stamp

the exciting news in the bicycle records office is the arrival of our new stamp. it has the little bicycle man our friend justin drew on it with our address. we will be using it on our orders. so no more tedious sharpie addressing! our helper gnomes are very excited about this new advancement. jenny's cd face is almost done, it will probobably look something like this. woah! no not really these are the totaly wrong colors. well, you can see the lines anyway. sarah lankutis drew the face.
ok bye.

deer city @ the artisan's cafe, bike and bike benefit

The Artisan's cafe has become an all ages mainstay in downtown olympia. After the manium closed it assumed the role of the only legit place downtown to throw an all ages show. there are a couple of downsides, the shape of the space is not ideal for shows, and you can't charge a cover so it is kind of tough for out of town bands to make much money. However they have a nice sound system and are super nice folks. Email chris@theartisanscefe.com if you want to book a show there.

A couple of days ago I saw deer city, the issaquah wonderkind. I was really impressed by his programming skills and musical ideas. June Madrona is playing a show with him and The Nextdoor Neighbors who are also really good even though they totally did not show up to their last show at the artisan's cafe.

Afterwards I went to the bike and bike benefit show. Bike and Bike is a free bike collective run in downtown olympia. they provide a free work space where you can go to fix your bike with all of the necessary tools and parts free of charge. The show featured three of olympia's local favorites, Sisters, Sex Vid, and Son Skull. Punks filled the tiny bike shop standing on top of the work counters, and spilling out into the street. Lots of folks were talking about the riots and the overturned cop car at the evergreen state college last night.
